A Brief History of Wimbledon

Wimbledon isn’t only a tennis tournament, it’s a cornerstone of sporting history. In 1869, a croquet club embraced the burgeoning sport of lawn tennis and became the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in 1877 to revitalise the club’s activities amidst a declining interest in croquet (thank you croquet haters for giving us Wimbledon). To raise funds for essential ground maintenance, specifically for repairing a pony roller, the club then organised its first tennis tournament – the first Wimbledon.
Over the decades, from its move from the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club to the current Church Road location in the 1920s to becoming the first tournament broadcast in colour in 1967, it’s safe to say Wimbledon has evolved significantly from humble beginnings. Wimbledon has consistently led the way in tennis innovation and prestige and today, it remains the only Grand Slam event played on grass, offering players and spectators alike a unique and fast-paced tennis experience.
The tournament’s first champion was Spencer William Gore, who claimed victory in front of a modest crowd of 200 spectators – who all paid a whopping entry fee of one shilling – and received 12 guineas in prize money and a prestigious silver challenge cup valued at 25 guineas, generously donated by The Field sports magazine. The Championship, despite its modest beginnings, made a profit of £10. This prompted subsequent rule adjustments to refine court dimensions and gameplay regulations, laying the foundations for what would later be recognised as the first Grand Slam tournament, setting the stage for Wimbledon’s enduring legacy as the pinnacle of tennis excellence.

Rules and Traditions

You can think again if you think attending Wimbledon is as easy as just turning up and taking a seat! Of course, you’ll see plenty of tennis but it’s also about embracing a set of cherished traditions:
  • Dress Code: Wimbledon has a strict all-white dress code for players, and while there is no dress code for spectators, it’s encouraged to maintain the tournament’s traditional elegance.
  • Queueing: Wimbledon is famous for its queueing culture, where fans patiently line up for hours to get coveted tickets for the day’s matches – it is one of the only sporting events in the world where people can bag show court tickets and ground passes on the day of the event. The Wimbledon Queue is an experience itself, often filled with camaraderie and excitement.
  • No Resale Policy: Tickets cannot be resold on-site, ensuring fairness and accessibility for all fans.
  • Royal Patronage: As a nod to its royal connections, Wimbledon enjoys regular attendance from members of the British Royal Family, adding a touch of regal flair to the proceedings.
  • Strawberries and Cream: No visit to Wimbledon is complete without indulging in the quintessential summer treat: strawberries and cream. Approximately 28,000 kilograms of English strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream are consumed annually during the tournament, making it a delicious tradition that perfectly complements a day of world-class tennis.
  • Pimm’s: One of the iconic drinks synonymous with Wimbledon is Pimm’s. This refreshing gin-based liqueur, mixed with lemonade and decorated with slices of cucumber, strawberries, mint, and orange, embodies the spirit of summer. Served over ice in tall glasses, Pimm’s is not just a beverage but a tradition at Wimbledon.
  • Champagne: Wimbledon, synonymous with grace and elegance, wouldn’t be complete without Champagne. The popping of corks and the clinking of glasses echo through the grounds – 17,000 bottles of champagne are enjoyed at Wimbledon each year – marking celebrations of exceptional tennis and timeless traditions. Champagne Lanson has been the official supplier of champagne to Wimbledon since 1977 and is regarded as part of ‘the Wimbledon experience’.
